Sandro Mezzadra, professeur à l’Université de Bologne, titulaire cette année de la Chaire internationale de philosophie contemporaine de Paris 8 qui invite chaque année un chercheur ou une chercheuse internationalement reconnu.e, sera présent au département au second semestre.
En lien avec ses travaux récents sur les relations entre globalisation, migration et capitalisme, sur le capitalisme contemporain et sur la critique post-coloniale, Sandro Mezzadra proposera deux séminaires à partir du 26 février (8 séances chacun), en anglais : Reading Marx Today et Rethinking Internationalism in an Age of Transition.
 
Sandro Mezzadra enseigne la théorie politique à l’Université de Bologne. Il est professeur associé à l’Institute for Culture and Society de la Western Sidney University et au Center for Cultural Research and Development de la Lingnan University de Hong Kong. Son travail a récemment porté sur les relations entre globalisation, migration et capitalisme, sur le capitalisme contemporain ainsi que sur la critique post-coloniale. Il participe au débat « post-opéraïste », et il est l’un des fondateurs du site www.euronomade.info.
Parmi ses livres : Diritto di fuga. Migrazioni, cittadinanza, globalizzazione (2006), La condizione postcoloniale. Storia e politica nel presente globale (2008), In the Marxian Workshops (2018) et Un mondo da guadagnare. Per una teoria politica del presente (2020). Avec Brett Neilson il est l’auteur de Border as Method, or, the Multiplication of Labor (2013) ainsi que de The Politics of Operations. Excavating Contemporary Capitalism (2019).

Marx, Mario Tronti wrote in the early 1960s, must not be confronted with his age but rather with our present. And Das Kapital must be evaluated with respect to today’s capitalism. Methodically inspired from such statement, the seminar will propose a reading of Marx guided by an analysis of the mutations of capitalism and of the global turmoil that make up the present conjuncture. To do that, however, there is a need to flesh out the peculiarity and historicity of Marx’s texts, to grasp their potentialities for a critical understanding of the present. Moving from a discussion of Marx’s materialism and theory of history, the seminar will focus on the critique of political economy (Grundrisse and Capital) and will end discussing some texts of the “late Marx.” Such notions as the “world market” and “aggregate capital” will be studied to make sense of the global dimensions of contemporary operations of capital, while Marx’s definition of capital as a social relation will provide a guiding thread for the whole seminar. A focus on the subjective figures that compose the social relation of capital will consequently be at the center of the proposed reading of Marx.

The seminar will start with a discussion of the current geopolitical turmoil from the angle of the combined disruptive effects of the global Covid-19 pandemic and of the Ukraine war. A critical discussion of world system theory will introduce the notion of multipolarity, while the tensions and gaps between what Giovanni Arrighi calls “territorialism” and capitalism will be analyzed from the viewpoint of a new theory of “political capitalism.” Based on such interpretation of the current transition in the capitalist world system the seminar will test the limits of mainstream approaches in geopolitics and International Relations, urging for a rethinking of internationalism along the lines of 20th century revolutionary traditions. In doing so, the seminar will be in dialogue with feminist, antiracist and postcolonial thinkers and will tackle a whole set of theoretical questions – ranging from the relation between internationalism and “cosmopolitics” to the vexed issue of the universal.
