Denise Ferreira da Silva est universitaire et artiste. Elle occupe actuellement les postes suivants : Professeure et Directrice de l’Institut pour la justice sociale, de genre, race, et sexualité de l’Université de Colombie britannique (GRSJ), et Professeure adjointe du Département d’art de l’Université Monash. Elle est membre du comité international de l’International Consortium of Critical Theory Programs et éditrice de Living Commons Press et Third Text.
Elle est l’autrice de Toward a Global Idea of Race (UMP, 2007), A Dívida Impagavel (OIP, LC, & Casa do Povo, 2019), Unpayable Debt (Sternberg Press, 2021), Homo Modernus (Cobogó, 2022). Elle est co-éditrice (avec Paula Chakravartty) de Race, Empire, and the Crisis of the Subprime (JHUP, 2013) et (avec Mark Harris) de Postcolonialism and the Law : Major Works (Routledge 2018) et Indigenous peoples and the Law : Major Works (Routledge, 2019). Ses nombreux articles et essais ont été publiés dans des revues interdisciplinaires de premier plan, telles que Social Text, Theory, Culture & Society, Social Identities, PhiloSOPHIA, Griffith Law Review, Theory & Event, The Black Scholar, pour n’en citer que quelques-unes. Ses écrits ont été traduits en plusieurs langues, notamment en portugais, espagnol, italien, français, allemand, suédois et danois.
Sa pratique artistique comprend les films Serpent Rain (2016), 4Waters-Deep Implicancy (2018) et Soot Breath/Corpus Infinitum, en collaboration avec Arjuna Neuman, ainsi que les pratiques artistiques relationnelles Poethical Readings et The Sensing Salon, en collaboration avec Valentina Desideri. Elle a exposé et donné des conférences dans des lieux d’art majeurs, tels que le Centre Pompidou (Paris), la Whitechapel Gallery (Londres), le MASP (S ?o Paulo) et le Guggenheim (New York). Elle a également écrit pour des publications dans le cadre d’événements artistiques internationaux (Biennale de Liverpool, 2017 ; Biennale de São Paulo, 2016, Biennale de Venise, 2017, et Documenta 14) et figuré dans des publications d’art, telles que Canadian Art, Texte Zur Kunst, et E-Flux.
Elle vit et travaille sur le territoire traditionnel, ancestral et non cédé du peuple Musqueam (x ?m ??k ??y ??m), qui parle h ?n ?q ??min ??m ?.

If every concept, like any other modern tool for thinking, cannot but presuppose interiority as its domain of operation, how can the latter be brought under interrogation - how can interiority itself become available to its own (our mental) tools ? In this seminar we consider whether the tools of raciality (that is, racial difference and cultural difference), which is the symbolic arsenal that plays in both the ethic-economic and an ethic-juridic corner of the liberal political architecture, can guide an analysis of interiority able to expose how it has operated in the accumulation of capital in the past two hundred years or so.
The core formulation of interiority engaged here is the on presented in Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason and Critique of Practical Reason, namely the formal thing or “unity of apperception.” Both books will be read with theoretical contributions that frame raciality as a political concept, such as (Gayatri C. Spivak’s, David C. Lloyd’s, Sylvia Wynter’s, Judith Butler’s, Frantz Fanon’s, C.L.R James’s, Édouard Glissant’s. Through these interventions we will read re-presentations of the Kantian Formal thing, the thing of interiority (the subject, subjectivity or the first-person singular) —, such as Husserl’s, Heidegger’s, Lacan’s, Foucault, Deleuze & Guattari’s) — that render it a crucial aspect of the liberal political entity.

Both basic meanings of the term category (division and class) recall both multiplicity (actual existents or events [spatiotemporal occurrences]) and linearity (in the sense of something that separates [category as division] and encloses category as class]. As such a category is a hybrid of sorts : a material (multiplicity) and formal (linearity) signifier, as something that invokes the tools of thought and that to which it turns in modern knowledge, that is, things or nature or the world. Taking the category of blackness as a guide, in this seminar we will read Kant’s Critique of the Power of Judgement, with the intent to track how linearity and multiplicity enter in his mapping of the aesthetic. Of crucial importance to this unorthodox reading of the Third Critique is precisely the fact that blackness (as exemplified in the many cases of police brutality against black persons) functions in the imagination as a signifier of a threat, so great that before it otherwise unacceptable violence and indifference are immediately authorized because deemed necessary for self-preservation. Because, as found in every justification for such acts of brutality, this is not due to lack of knowledge, but to how blackness (as skin color) has been social scientifically produced as a signifier of criminality, the ethic-juridic role it performs calls for a a consideration of how the Kantian figuring of the aesthetic outlines a sensibility (the one which would be re-presented in later delineations of the field) that cannot but approach that which is divided and enclosed by the category of blackness as a datum, that is, as something that belongs to the sphere of the sensible and not ( as it is the case) that of the intelligible.
